Arts Administration & Advocacy

Why Study Arts Administration and Advocacy?

Learn the business behind the fine, creative and performing arts and prepare for fulfilling work in the commercial or non-profit arts.

Drawing on skills and knowledge from multiple disciplines, the arts administration and advocacy minor provides students with transferable skills for a career in the commercial or nonprofit arts. Students in the fine, creative, and performing arts will gain an understanding of current practices in management, funding, budgeting, mission fulfillment, and public relations for artists and arts organizations, as well as tools to advocate for the value of the arts. The internship course allows students to extend their classwork to professional, real-stakes experiences.

Students who major in the arts find the arts administration minor a valuable addition to their studies, preparing them to articulate the value of their work and of the arts more generally. Students will prepare to promote and represent their work to the public, responsibly and sustainably manage their financial futures as artists, and promote inclusion and creative vision through their work on campus and beyond. The arts administration minor prepares students to contribute to their communities through advocacy, administration, and management of arts organizations and through their own professional artistic practice.

What Can You Do with an Arts Administration Minor?

Students who complete an arts administration minor are prepared to work as administrators, managers, marketers, production staff, and development personnel in both commercial and nonprofit companies. Graduates are prepared to pursue personally and economically sustainable careers in the arts, ultimately creating opportunities for others as well.
