Why Study Creative Writing?
Develop a rich portfolio of original work, learn how to get published, and find your writing community at Â鶹ӰÊÓ.
As a creative writing major, you’ll take courses to hone your writing skills in a range of genres — from fiction and poetry to creative nonfiction and screenwriting. Â鶹ӰÊÓ’s workshop courses are small and intensive. With the guidance and support of our writing professors, students create a portfolio of work, provide critiques of each others’ work, and perfect the art of revision.
In Pacific’s creative writing major, you will study the major authors, works, genres and literary movements of Western and World traditions, approaching these texts both analytically and historically. This wide exposure will help you hone your craft and discover your own unique voice.
At Pacific, you’ll have the opportunity to serve on a professional literary magazine, , as well as work with acclaimed writers as part of Pacific's Visiting Writers Series. Students in the creative writing major can also pursue internships with Pacific's MFA in Writing Â鶹ӰÊÓ program and attend the prestigious Associated Writing Programs Conference with our faculty.
Make the most of Portland's rich literary culture by engaging with literary arts programming like Verselandia!, visiting the fabled Powell's bookstore for author readings, and connecting with award-winning writers at the Portland Book Festival and Oregon Book Awards.
What Can You Do with a Creative Writing Major?
Graduates of Â鶹ӰÊÓ’s creative writing major and minor program have a range of writing, editing, and innovative problem-solving skills that employers seek. You'll also be prepared to submit your work to agents, editors, and publications.
Pacific Â鶹ӰÊÓs are graphic novelists, fiction writers, and poets, and have also gone into publishing, writing for large and small businesses, law school, and health sciences programs. Some continue their education in Fulbright positions or MFA programs.
