Applied Theatre

Why Study Applied Theatre?

Apply the traditional skills, tools and values of theatre arts to  community-building and civic engagement in this service- and career-oriented program.

In the applied theatre major or minor, you’ll build a strong foundation in the liberal arts, study traditional theatre, and put your talents and training to work in civic engagement settings to support wellness, identity, and growth. Applied theatre practitioners engage with community partners to share creative, collaborative experiences. The applied theatre major offers students a network of professional pathways as they connect to the professional theatre world, local social service organizations, and the community.

Applied theatre majors intern with senior centers, after-school programs, programs for at-risk youth, arts administration organizations, or other non-profits. Students may also get involved with the McCall Center for Civic Engagement, which works with campus groups and community partners to organize service, awareness campaigns, fundraising and other civic engagement activities.

You’ll learn from theatre faculty who are committed educators and award-winning professionals in their field, and who maintain careers in performing, directing, playwriting, and design. Students also have the opportunity to work with guest directors and instructors from the professional theatre.

What Can You Do with an Applied Theatre Major?

Graduates share their talents by using theatre and drama to work at senior centers, with at-risk youth in schools and after-school programs, or in other health, education and community settings.
