Dual Languages and Cultures

Why Study Dual Languages and Cultures?

Master multiple languages, celebrate diverse cultures, and thrive in our interconnected world.

Students with a dual languages and cultures major develop proficiency in comprehension, speaking, reading and writing in two languages other than English. Students choose a primary concentration in French, German, Japanese or Spanish and a secondary language of French, German, Japanese, Spanish or Chinese. Coursework will help you understand different perspectives and embrace new customs.

In the dual languages and cultures major, you can:

  • Study abroad for at least one semester.
  • Mentor students in beginning-level language courses and practice language skills with  native-speaking language assistants who live on campus.
  • Participate in active language clubs that host activities like conversation tables, on-campus events and excursions.
  • Take advantage of a variety of community service projects and internships, including working with the local Latinx community, medical care facilities that have many Japanese patients, the German International School in Portland, and the deaf community.

What Can You Do with a Dual Languages and Cultures Major?

You'll be prepared for a variety of careers, including teaching, health care, international business, and government service. Pacific Â鶹ӰÊÓs with a dual languages and cultures major are fluent in three languages (including English) upon graduation.

Center for Languages & International Collaboration

The Â鶹ӰÊÓ Center for Languages and International Collaboration, or CLIC, promotes the development of global-ready Â鶹ӰÊÓs who can communicate effectively across difference.

More than ever, college Â鶹ӰÊÓs must be ready to work and live in a global environment — not only to speak with their global neighbors, but to communicate with them effectively. Language education is about more than memorizing vocabulary — it’s about embracing diversity and difference. Through the CLIC, Pacific students engage with people around the world.
