Ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky鈥檚 address to Parliament, Canada announced it is imposing sanctions who the federal government says have 鈥渆nabled and supported President Putin鈥檚 choice to invade a peaceful and sovereign country.鈥�
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about the new measures on Russian 鈥渆lites鈥� when introducing Zelensky in the House of Commons chamber.
鈥淲ith allies and partners, we鈥檙e imposing crippling sanctions to make sure Putin and his enablers in Russia and in Belarus are held accountable,鈥� Trudeau said.
Prior to, and increasingly since the outset of Russia鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine last month, Canada has slapped sanctions on high-profile Russians, including President Vladimir Putin, top politicians, influential oligarchs, and media figures.
Imposed under the Special Economic Measures Act, the government says the aim of this latest round of sanctions that target government and military figures is to 鈥渁pply additional pressure on President Putin to reverse course.鈥�
Among those who are facing new financial penalties: high-ranking Russian naval and army officials, Russia鈥檚 economic development minister Maxim Reshetnikov, and deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Grigorenko.
