A Canadian citizen has been rescued from a Greek ferry that caught fire in the Adriatic Sea, Foreign Affairs confirmed Monday.
The man鈥檚 condition was not immediately known. Foreign Affairs said it would not release any further details, citing privacy concerns.
In a statement, a department spokesperson said consular officials have been in contact with Greek and Italian officials 鈥渁nd stand ready to provide consular assistance if and as required.鈥
Earlier Monday, Greek officials said an adult male from Canada, listed as N. Pejcinovski, was on the ferry manifest.
Ten people died after a fire broke out Sunday on a car deck of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic. The ferry was travelling from the Greek port of Patras to Ancona in Italy.
By early Monday afternoon, 427 people were rescued from the ferry, including 56 crew members.
Foreign Affairs has offered its 鈥渄eepest sympathies鈥 to those affected by the disaster and said it is 鈥渃losely monitoring鈥 the situation.
