GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - A U.S. military judge is threatening to suspend the trial of Canadian Omar Khadr unless the government provides defence lawyers with day-to-day records of his confinement.
Khadr's lawyers say details of Khadr's interrogations at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo, Cuba, as well as his mental health, may provide grounds to suppress self-incriminating statements.
The judge, U.S. army Col. Peter Brownback, expressed frustration at a pretrial hearing today that the government has not complied with his instructions to give the records to the defence.
Brownback says he is giving the government until May 22 to comply or else he will suspend the proceedings.
Khadr is accused of unlawfully killing a U.S. soldier during a firefight in Afghanistan.
