Two RCMP officers were shot and wounded during a 17-hour standoff at a home near Breton, Alberta, early Sunday morning.
Police received a call after 5 p.m. Saturday night about a man suffering from a gunshot wound at a rural home about 18 kilometres west of Breton. The 35-year-old victim had non-life-threatening injuries.
The RCMP's Emergency Response Team, officers from the local detachment and a police dog unit set up a perimeter around the home and evacuated nearby houses.
Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police exchanged gunfire with an unknown individual who was inside the home.
Two officers with the Emergency Response Team were airlifted to an Edmonton hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said one of the injured officers is a 10-year member of the force. The other, whose injuries are "a bit more serious," has more than 30 years of service, Taniguchi told Â鶹ӰÊÓ Channel in a telephone interview from Edmonton.
Taniguchi would not elaborate on the nature of the officers' injuries.
Police attempted to negotiate with those inside the home, and took a man and woman into custody shortly before 11 a.m. They both were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their identities have not been released.
Charges have yet to be laid, but are pending, Taniguchi said.
The RCMP's Serious Crimes Branch is investigating the incident. While neighbouring residents have since been allowed back into their homes, part of the road leading to the scene remained closed Sunday night.
Shane Pye, who lives nearby, said when he heard that police officers had been shot, he immediately thought of the incident in Mayerthorpe, Alta., where four Mounties were shot and killed in 2005.
"That's the first thing I thought," Pye told CTV Edmonton. "Who is out there shooting cops again?"
ASIRT, the provincial agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that have resulted in serious injury or death, is also on the scene. The community is about 100 km southwest of Edmonton.
