ABUJA, Nigeria - Nigerian health officials are reporting the first swine flu-related death in the West African country.
The Federal Ministry of Health says a 38-year-old woman in Lagos became sick six weeks ago and died on Jan. 5.
Nigeria's Minister of Health Babatunde Osotimehin said late Monday that the woman had tested positive for H1N1, and was the first recorded death from that type of flu in the country. Osotimehin said the patient had travelled to the United States three months earlier.
The ministry said there are 11 confirmed cases of swine flu in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation. Osotimehin said there was another suspected swine flu death, but that the patient died before samples could be taken.
