NEW YORK -- Hours before Andrew Wiggins won the NBA draft, his fashion statement was a clear winner.
The 19-year-old phenom from Vaughan, Ont., wore a black Waraire Boswell jacket with a white floral print specially designed for the occasion. He finished the look with a black bow tie and black oversized glasses.
Photos of Wiggins had Twitter abuzz even before the draft began.
"As soon as Russell Westbrook saw Andrew Wiggins' suit, he got his stylist on the phone and started screaming," tweeted one person.
Among other tweets:
"Wiggins may have locked up that No. 1 pick with his suit selection."
"Wiggins' suit is tough as nails."
"I need andrew wiggins suit and I needed it yesterday"
"No one will question if Andrew Wiggins has superstar potential in that suit."
Wiggins said he purposely chose a look that would make him stand out from the crowd.
"We just wanted to do something different, really stand out, try to win it on both ends, the stylish points and to come No. 1," he said.
Fashion is always a talking point at the draft -- much like the red carpet at any awards show.
Jalen Rose famously wore a bright red pinstripe suit at the 1994 draft, Glenn Robinson went with a pumpkin-coloured suit a year later, Peja Stojakovic wore blue corduroy in 1996.
Joakim Noah wore pink pinstripes in 2007, while LeBron James wore all white, down to his tie, in 2003.
