A Canadian hockey player has taken the ALS ice bucket challenge to a whole new level.
NHL free agent Paul Bissonnette, an Ontario native and former Phoenix Coyote winger, accepted a challenge from former teammate Keith Yandle to join the viral campaign and raise awareness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Thousands of people, including other athletes and celebrities, have dumped buckets of ice water over their heads and posted videos of the stunt .
But Bissonnette wanted to stand out so he put on a colourful speedo and got a helicopter to drop a bucket of glacier water on him as he stood on top of a cliff above a picturesque lake.
He also made sure his ice bucket challenge was shot in HD.
Bissonnette then called on NBA star LeBron James, as well as NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, to join the challenge.
The fundraising initiative asks people to douse themselves with a bucket of ice water and challenge others to do the same within 24 hours. If they don’t, they must make a donation to an ALS charity.
The Ice Bucket Challenge, which has been used to raise money for other causes, blew up on social media after friends and relatives of former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates used it to raise awareness about Lou Gehrig's disease.
Frates, 29, was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease in 2012 and is now unable to walk or talk.
