SLAVE LAKE, Alta. - An Alberta town busy rebuilding itself after a devastating wildfire this spring is also losing five of its 13 doctors.
The doctors are leaving Slave Lake by the end of the year.
Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee says two of the doctors are a married couple with young children who lost their home in the May wildfire.
She says the stress of losing their home and dealing with insurance headaches played a role in their decision to leave the community.
Dr. Kevin Worry, a medical director with Alberta Health Services, says doctors from other areas of the province will temporarily help out while permanent replacements are recruited.
A wind-whipped forest fire destroyed more than 400 homes and buildings -- nearly one-third of the town -- causing more than $700 million in damage.
