If you’ve got any valuable items or important documents at home, at your workplace, or anywhere else for that matter, you’re likely going to want a secure place to keep them. Disasters like fires and robberies happen, and it’s a good idea to store your precious items somewhere they won’t be accessible or easily damaged. We have just the thing for you.
A safe is one of the most secure places to keep valuables and important documents. They come in a variety of sizes, usually have two shelves for organization, and can be outfitted with a number of different lock types. They’re almost always fireproof, waterproof, and drillproof for extra security. They’re also easily mountable to walls and floors!
If a safe sounds like the perfect place for your most prized possessions, we’d love to help you pick out the right one. Safes will vary in things like price, interior capacity, overall size and weight, number of door bolts, lock type, and more! You’ll want to think about every feature to get the best fit.
This comprehensive guide will investigate the best safes in Canada right now and outline the criteria you should consider while making your purchase decision. Let’s dive right into our top five products.
Top Pick: SentrySafe SFW123DSB Fireproof and Waterproof Steel Home Safe
Connected Pick: Yale Medium Smart Safe with Wi-Fi
Budget Pick: Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe
Compact Pick: Amazon Basics Steel Security Safe and Lock Box
Also Great: RPNB Deluxe Biometric Fireproof Safe
We like pretty much everything the SentrySafe SFW123DSB Fireproof and Waterproof Steel Home Safe has to offer. A 1.23 cubic foot interior gives you lots of space for your valuables, and with a number of key hooks, a folder slot, and an adjustable shelf, it can fit pretty much anything you need to put in it. It’s also fully fireproof for up to an hour and waterproof for up to 8” submerged. Talk about disaster-proofing.
This safe is also extremely tamper-resistant. To open the safe, you need both the dial code and the physical key, so that’s an extra layer of protection right there. It also has four larger-than-average door bolts instead of the usual two or three, plus a pry-resistant hinge bar. You can be pretty confident that nobody with ill intentions will ever be able to gain access to this safe. It does its job well.
There are only two reasons this safe might not be a great fit for you. The first is the price. This is one of the more expensive safes, and while it has all the features to provide that extra value, it still might not feel like a worthwhile investment for you. Also, this one is pretty limited when it comes to mounting. It can’t be mounted to a wall, only a floor, and you’ll lose your waterproofing if you decide to do that.
Overall, the SentrySafe SFW123DSB Fireproof and Waterproof Steel Home Safe is one of our favourite safes of all time. It’s got some of the best security features you’ll find, exceptional disaster-proofing, and a versatile interior. What more could you ask for?

Reviewers have a very high opinion of the SentrySafe SFW123DSB Fireproof and Waterproof Steel Home Safe. They are very fond of the double lock type — needing the dial code and the physical key makes it extra secure. They also appreciate that the shelf inside is adjustable, and the key hooks are helpful for storing keys as well as USBs.

The Yale Medium Smart Safe with Wi-Fi is a pretty neat option. If you’d prefer to allow remote access to your belongings and save time opening it when you’re at home, you’ll love the Wi-Fi connectivity. You’ll be able to use voice assistants or the companion app on your phone to open your safe hands-free. Pretty cool, huh?
It has a bunch of other high-value features too. We love the interior light the most — it comes on automatically when you open the door so you can see everything inside without a flashlight. So helpful. The smaller size of this safe is also ideal for a ton of reasons — it can fit easily in a closet or bed, and it can be mounted to either a wall or the floor wherever is convenient for you.
Our main concern with this safe is its reliability. The Wi-Fi connection is a key component of using the app or voice assistants to open the safe, but it isn’t super reliable. You might still have to use the manual options. Also, it’s one of the more expensive options and isn’t the largest, so you might not feel you get enough value in return for the cost.
Overall, the Yale Medium Smart Safe with Wi-Fi is the best option if you’re looking for something that can connect to your phone or voice assistants. Remote access is a great thing. It isn’t the most reliable safe, but when it works, the convenience will blow you away.
Performance: 4.5/5
Usability: 4.5/5
Price: 4/5
Quality: 4.5/5
Reviewers have mixed feelings about the Yale Medium Smart Safe with Wi-Fi. They really appreciate how many ways there are to get access to the safe, but they aren’t all reliable. The Wi-Fi connection isn’t super reliable and sometimes it doesn’t work at all when they’re away from home. The interior light is a nice touch, though, and the small size makes it perfect for every space.

We really like the Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe. It’s one of the most user-friendly options since it has a simple keypad lock and two backup keys included just in case. We’re also very happy with its size. You’ll have plenty of space to store documents, electronics, jewellery, and every other type of valuable you want to tuck away for safekeeping.
This safe is also an incredible choice for people who would like to mount their safe for extra security. It can be mounted to a wall or floor with pre-drilled holes, so it won’t take you long to get it secured in an ideal location. Throw in an unbeatable price, and you’ve got a pretty awesome safe on your hands!
One of our only concerns with this one is the level of security. It doesn’t offer the same fireproofing or waterproofing as other options, and it’s fairly easy to tamper with if someone has the right tools and experience. It’s really only ideal if you’re not concerned with major disasters/threats. Something to keep in mind for sure.
All in all, the Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe is a really superb option for this price point. It has tons of space inside to fit everything that’s important to you, and you won’t have any hassles getting it open again later. As long as you’re not disaster-prepping, you’ll love this one.

Quality: 4.5/5
Reviewers have good things to say about the Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe. They love the price, of course, but it’s also just a really well-rounded safe. The keypad is easy to use and they appreciate the inclusion of two backup keys. It’s got a large interior to fit laptops, jewellery, and paper documents. And it’s easy to mount to a wall or floor if they so choose. It just isn’t the most tamper-proof.

You’re looking for an extra-secure safe
Dimensions: 13” x 13” x 14.2”

If you’ve got only a few small items worth storing in a safe, or you’re just really low on square footage in your home or office, the Amazon Basics Steel Security Safe and Lock Box is going to be your best choice. Not only is it one of the most compact and easily mountable options out there, but it’s also one of the most budget-friendly. Talk about a win!
One of the things we love most about this one is how well-designed the interior is. It has an adjustable shelf inside to give you more options for organization, but it can also be completely removed for storing bulkier items. The entire interior, including the shelf, is also fully carpeted to make sure your valuables don’t get damaged if they move around. How thoughtful.
One of the only problems you’ll run into with this option is the limited space for items. If you have a lot of valuables or just some larger objects to keep safe, this won’t be a great fit. Also, because of its less expensive design, it isn’t as tamper-proof as other options either. If you’re mostly worried about theft, you should look for a more secure safe.
Overall, the Amazon Basics Steel Security Safe and Lock Box is a pretty great choice if you’re looking for something highly compact and highly affordable. It has its limitations, of course, but for many people, it’ll be the perfect fit.
Performance: 4.5/5

Reviewers have mostly good things to say about the Amazon Basics Steel Security Safe and Lock Box. The small size is perfect for storing phones, jewellery, and similar-sized items, and it’s the perfect size to tuck away under a bed, in a closet, or on a shelf elsewhere. The electronic lock is very reliable, and it’s easy to change the code, too. They couldn’t be happier with the price, either.

We really love the RPNB Deluxe Biometric Fireproof Safe. Its felt-lined interior is luxurious for all of your valuables, and the shelf can be adjusted to one of eight heights to make sure all of your belongings can fit inside it easily. It’s also super secure. It has three large door bolts and thick walls that make it tamper-proof and resistant to fire for up to 30 minutes!
It’ll also sound an alarm and lock the digital entry mechanisms if someone tries to guess the code incorrectly five times or shakes it around a lot. Oh yeah, the entry mechanisms. You can set a 4-6 digit code with the 4-digit keypad and save up to 20 fingerprints in the biometric scanner. With either method, you’ll have access to your things in less than two seconds.
We really think this safe is going to be a great fit for just about everybody. One of the only things that might not work for you is its size — it’s a larger safe and needs a good amount of square footage to call home. Also, this isn’t one of the more affordable options, so if you’re not overly concerned about security, there are definitely cheaper safes that could work for you.
Overall, the RPNB Deluxe Biometric Fireproof Safe is one of our favourites of all time. Not only does it have some of the most responsive entry systems, but it’s got a well-cushioned interior and some of the best durability you can find. It’s as close to flawless as safes can get, really.

Reviewers have wonderful things to say about the RPNB Deluxe Biometric Fireproof Safe. It’s made of high-quality materials that are fireproof for up to 30 minutes, and they feel that they really got what they paid for. The biometric scanner and keypad both work quickly and reliably, and they have a lot of confidence in the safe’s ability to resist theft. They’d all buy it again.

Interior Capacity: 1.29 cubic feet

Some safes can be purchased for less than $100, but others can easily exceed $400. In general, more expensive safes will have a larger capacity, better resistance to floods and fires, more advanced entry systems (Wi-Fi, digital keypads, etc.), and better overall security.
The interior capacity of a safe is measured in cubic feet and typically falls between 0.5 and 1.5. Of course, larger safes can hold more items, but they’ll also take up more square footage in your home.
There are a number of lock types/entry systems that can be equipped on a safe. The most common options are keypads (sometimes digital) with physical keys as backups, but some safes will have biometric fingerprint scanners, Wi-Fi compatibility for voice assistant or companion app entry, and more!
The number of door bolts is something to think about when it comes to safe security. The less secure safes will only have two door bolts, but the toughest safes can have as many as four. You’ll also want to pay attention to the thickness of the bolts — thicker is better, but most are less than an inch thick. If you’re worried about people breaking into your safe, one-inch bolts are the way to go.
