HALIFAX - Technicians are inspecting a Sea King helicopter that broke through ice on a small island off Halifax harbour, hoping to get it back to base later today.
The aging military chopper was on a routine training flight Thursday afternoon practising landings on Pennant's Island, near Terrance Bay when it broke through ice in a bog as it was touching down.
There were no injuries.
Lt.-Col. Jeff Tasseron of 12 Wing Shearwater, the chopper's home base, says the Sea King has been jacked up and is being inspected for damage.
Barring what he calls "any show-stoppers'' they hope to spark it up and fly it back to base today.
A security team was dispatched to stay with the aircraft overnight.
