The Facebook-owned chat service is rolling out a new video chat feature on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone devices from Tuesday, November 15.

In direct competition with FaceTime and Skype, WhatsApp has launched a new international video call option. Just like its competitors, the function will allow both front- and back-camera video, allowing users to 'chat' face to face or share their surroundings. Unlike Skype, however, the app does not yet support group calls.

The update comes following criticism that the company was dragging its feet over product development -- video chat being a long-awaited feature. In a blog post, WhatsApp even recognizes the delay, admitting "Over the years we've received many requests from our users for video calling."

Once available, the feature can be accessed in the same place as voice calls. Pressing the phone icon will give users the option between a video call and a regular voice call.
