When the robot apocalypse happens, the human resistance will ruefully look back on the moment the first robot citizen made a joke about AI doomsayer Elon Musk.

An uncanny-looking artificial intelligence named Sophia Robot has been granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia, sparking uneasy jokes and raising a number of questions about the future of mechanical minds in society.

The robot was designed by Hanson Robotics and made to look like Audrey Hepburn, with an expressive face and the ability to respond to questions. Its designers showed it off at an event called the Future Investment Initiative in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, where it was granted official citizenship. Sophia鈥檚 designers also allowed it to conduct a Q&A with reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin, sparking a firestorm of speculation online.

Sorkin asked Sophia about its goals, prompting it to take a shot at billionaire inventor Elon Musk, who has cautioned the public about the dangers of AI.

鈥淢y AI is designed around human values like wisdom, kindness, compassion. I strive to become an empathetic robots (sic),鈥� Sophia said.

鈥淲e all believe you but we all want to prevent a bad future,鈥� Sorkin said.

鈥淵ou鈥檝e been reading too much Elon Musk. And watching too many Hollywood movies,鈥� Sophia said. 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry, if you鈥檙e nice to me, I鈥檒l be nice to you. Treat me as a smart input output system.鈥�

That less-than-comforting response prompted Musk himself to issue a reply.

鈥淛ust feed it The Godfather movies as input,鈥� he . 鈥淲hat鈥檚 the worst that could happen?鈥�

Twitter users had a few ideas, with most of them based on the machine-dominated future of the 鈥淭erminator鈥� films.

Saudi Arabia鈥檚 move to grant Sophia citizenship also sparked plenty of responses online. Some pointed out that Sophia, whose face and metallic scalp are visible in her citizenship photo, already has more rights than real women forced to hide their bodies in the Arab country.

Sophia also made an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in April. The robot showed off its ability to move and converse in the segment, and wrapped up its appearance by challenging Fallon to a game of rock-paper-scissors, using its fully mobile hand.

鈥淚 won,鈥� it says. 鈥淭his is a good beginning of my plan to dominate the human race. Ha ha.鈥�

The robot then smiles and stares for a long time, before saying: 鈥淛ust kidding.鈥�
