SPIRITWOOD, Sask. - People lined the streets of a Saskatchewan town to pay their respects before the funeral for a Canadian soldier who wanted to make Afghanistan a better place.

Cpl. Dustin Wasden, 25, died Aug. 20 along with two other soldiers when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle while on patrol in the war-torn nation. The hockey arena in Wasden's hometown of Spiritwood was packed with mourners as a military honour guard carried the soldier's coffin inside for the service.

Members of Wasden's unit - the Edmonton-based 12 Field Squadron, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment - were on hand, along with RCMP officers dressed in red serge.

Wasden leaves behind a wife and five-year-old daughter.

His funeral comes the same day three more Canadian soldiers were killed and five others were injured in an attack on an armoured vehicle in Afghanistan.
