VANCOUVER - A federal lawyer says issues around Vancouver's safe injection site are so complex, a full trial is needed.
Ten days have been set aside for a summary trial that permits only affidavits from experts who can't be cross-examined.
Lawyer John Hunter says a full trial is needed to air the question of whether drug addicts have a Constitutional right to access the site because the facility could save their lives.
The safe injection site, called Insite, is North America's only such facility and allows people to inject illegal drugs such as cocaine and heroin under the supervision of a nurse.
The federal government allowed Insite to open almost five years ago as a pilot project, but the site operates under an exemption from Canada's drug laws that expires on June 30 and the federal government has not said what it will do.
The Portland Hotel Society operates the site and launched the case.
