TORONTO - Irish novelist Roddy Doyle will serve on the jury for the 2012 Scotiabank Giller Prize, which recognizes an outstanding Canadian novel or short story collection.
The author, whose novels include "The Commitments" and "Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha," will be joined on the panel by writer and essayist Anna Porter and American author Gary Shteyngart.
Novels by the Leningrad-born Shteyngart include "The Russian Debutante's Handbook" and, most recently, "Super Sad True Love Story."
Porter spent her early childhood in Hungary, then lived in New Zealand and ultimately settled in Canada in 1969. She's the founder and publisher of Key Porter Books and the author of three crime novels and the memoir "The Storyteller."
The Giller long list will be announced on Sept. 4, with the short list due to come out Oct. 1 and the winner set to be named at a black-tie dinner on Oct. 30.
The winning writer gets $50,000 while runners up receive $5,000 apiece.
Last year's Giller went to Esi Edugyan for "Half Blood Blues."
The prize was created in 1994 by Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovtich in memory of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller.
