Jordanian King Abdullah II will visit Canada this week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has confirmed.

Abdullah, the leader of one of Canada's allies in the war against Islamic State militants, will arrive in Ottawa on Wednesday.

The visit 鈥渨ill provide an opportunity to highlight the strength of the Canada-Jordan bilateral relationship,鈥 according to a news release from the Prime Minister鈥檚 Office.

Abdullah and Harper will also discuss ISIS, the influx of Syrian refugees in Jordan and efforts to find "a negotiated solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians," according to the release.

Last year, Ottawa pledged $185 million over six years in development aid to Jordan. That includes economic initiatives and support for Jordan鈥檚 response to the crisis in Syria.

The federal government also says it has provided more than $76 million in humanitarian assistance to refugees in Jordan.

Jordan, a country of eight million, is currently hosting an estimated 625,000 Syrian refugees.
