OTTAWA, Ont. -- Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt met with a hunger striking aboriginal leader on Friday.
Grand Elder Raymond Robinson says he will go without food and water until Prime Minister Harper agrees to have a meaningful dialogue with aboriginal leaders.
A statement from Valcourt's office describes the meeting with the Manitoba elder as frank but positive.
Valcourt encouraged Robinson to consume food and water and offered to visit Robinson's Cross First Nation this summer.
Robinson is the second First Nations leader to go without food in an effort to draw attention to aboriginal issues.
Northern Ontario chief Theresa Spence took a similar action during the winter.
First Nations leaders are angry with the Harper government's enivronmental policies and approach to treaty rights.
They say the federal government has attached strings to their funding, including a clause that requires them to abide by existing and future legislation.
