An Ontario MP will be one of many Canadians watching history unfold in Philadelphia on Thursday night, when Hillary Clinton becomes the first woman to accept a major U.S. party鈥檚 nomination for president.

Salma Zahid, a Liberal MP who represents the Ontario riding of Scarborough Centre, is attending the Democratic National Convention as a member of the Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary Group. The organization is made up of delegates from Canada鈥檚 Parliament and U.S. Congress, and meets annually to exchange information and discuss issues affecting both countries.

In an interview with 麻豆影视 Channel Thursday morning, Zahid said she鈥檚 very excited that she will be there when Clinton delivers her speech at the convention.

鈥淥bviously it鈥檚 not the first in the world, but a lot of people look towards the U.S.A., and it鈥檚 really going to be an exciting moment when a woman accepts the nomination,鈥 Zahid said.

Zahid had just started her undergraduate program in Pakistan in 1988 when Benazir Bhutto became the country鈥檚 first female prime minister.

鈥淚 know what an exciting moment it was there, and the impact it made on me as a young girl,鈥 she said.

Zahid said young girls 鈥渁round the world鈥 will listen to Clinton鈥檚 acceptance speech Thursday night, and hopefully feel inspired.

She said it鈥檚 been 鈥渋nteresting鈥 to watch U.S. politics in action at the convention, noting the meeting is 鈥渕uch larger鈥 than political events in Canada.

She鈥檚 happy to see all the 鈥減assionate people鈥 who are 鈥渃oncerned for the future of their country.鈥

Zahid is at the convention as a 鈥渘on-partisan observer,鈥 and said, as a member of Canadian Parliament, she is looking forward to working closely with whoever becomes U.S. president.
