More than 1.6 million people cast ballots in the federal election during the first two days of advance polls, which opened on Friday. This is a 34 per cent increase from the 2011 federal election, according to Elections Canada.

Elections Canada that about 780,000 electors voted on Saturday, bringing the two-day total to 1,642,000.

"This represents a 34 per cent increase over the 1,223,000 electors who voted during the first two days of advance polls at the 2011 federal general election,鈥 Elections Canada said on its website.Voters waited in long lines across the country to cast their ballots this weekend.

At one Calgary polling station, dozens of voters lined up before the polls opened on Sunday, registration cards in hand.

Advance polls are open on Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. local time.

The federal election is on Oct. 19.
