The Assembly of First Nations has decided not to appoint an interim leader until its next election, following Shawn Atleo鈥檚 surprise resignation last week.

The AFN election is not expected to be held until fall, APTN reported. In the meantime, Quebec and Labrador Regional Chief Ghislain Picard will act the assembly鈥檚 spokesperson.

Regional chiefs from across the country met in Ottawa Tuesday to determine what AFN鈥檚 next steps should be.

Atleo abruptly resigned on Friday, saying he did not want to be a 鈥渓ightning rod鈥 in the debate over the government鈥檚 Bill C-33, which aims to reform aboriginal education in Canada.

Chiefs from several provinces want Ottawa to scrap the First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act, saying it doesn鈥檛 really give aboriginals control of their children鈥檚 education.

Atleo has publicly supported the bill, and was heavily criticized for it.
