Montreal police and Interpol are trying to locate a five-year-old boy believed to be en route to Iraq after reportedly being abducted by his father.

Police say Kesir Al-Meliky and his son, Karar, got on a flight to Jordan on Monday.

"The man had previously expressed his intention to return to his home country (of Iraq),'' police spokesman Olivier Lapointe said Thursday.

Lapointe said an airline employee alerted police after seeing images of the man and his son on television.

On Tuesday, the boy's mother came to police to report the disappearance after Karar failed to return from a weekend with his father.

"It was more than 24 hours before we were aware of the abduction,'' said Lapointe.

"Right now there's a warrant against the father, a 33-year-old man, for abduction of his own child... we're working with Interpol trying to locate the child and the suspect.''

Al-Meliky is described as having black hair, brown eyes and a weight of 154 pounds. Karar weighs 66 pounds has brown hair, brown eyes.

The boy was wearing a red shirt, blue three-quarter cut pants and Spiderman sandals when he was last seen.
