ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan's president says his country is making headway in the fight against al Qaeda and Taliban militants near the Afghan border.

But President Asif Ali Zardari told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday that the fight is hampered by U.S. missiles strikes against militant targets in the region.

He says he hopes President-elect Barack Obama will take a "new look" at Pakistani objections to the strikes.

The United States is pressing Pakistan to take more action against militants in the rugged and lawless northwestern border area.

Zardari says a recent military offensive there has left the area "in a much better place" than before.
