OWEN SOUND, Ont. - A child in the Owen Sound, Ont.-area has died from chickenpox complications.
Karen Sweiger, with the Grey Bruce Health Unit, says the child did not qualify for the publicly funded vaccine for either one year olds or five year olds.
Sweiger says the child died of a rare and serious infection after contracting chickenpox.
Sweiger could not say if the child had ever received a chickenpox vaccine at all.
There have been just six other chickenpox-related child deaths reported since 2000.
The health unit is not releasing any other information about the child.
