HALIFAX - Nova Scotia has released it's contingency plan to deal with a possible flu pandemic.

Health Minister Chris D'Entremont says the aim is to reduce the amount of sickness and death during an outbreak. The plan focuses on communications, surveillance, vaccines, anti-virals and health services

D'Entremont says a pandemic would greatly stress the health system so they have to find ways to ensure that care can be delivered.

Health Promotion and Protection Minister Barry Barnet says the province will follow national guidelines in rolling out a vaccine and antiviral strategy.

Studies suggest that 15 to 35 per cent of Nova Scotia's population would become ill during a pandemic, with up to 3,000 requiring hospitalization and as many as 1,000 possible deaths.
