OTTAWA - NDP Leader Jack Layton is calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to meet right away with opposition leaders on the economy and Canada's banking system.
Layton says Harper has to remember he's still running a minority government and must consult with opposition parties on major issues.
He is urging Harper to abandon his `my way or the highway' tactics and realize he's got to work with other parties.
Layton's New Democrats won 37 seats in Tuesday's federal election, up from 30 at dissolution while, at 143 seats, Harper's Conservative government came up 12 short of a majority.
Layton says far more Canadians voted against Harper's agenda than supported it, and he wants the prime minister to fully brief opposition leaders on the country's economic state and the government's options in dealing with the crisis.
Harper announced a six-point plan to address the economic crisis, but it did not include meeting with opposition leaders.
