QUEBEC - The two opposition parties in the national assembly have voted in favour of a motion urging Premier Jean Charest not to call an election this fall.
But it's not expected to quell widespread speculation the Liberal premier will call an election next Wednesday for a vote on Dec. 8.
The combined total of the two parties easily allowed the motion to pass in the legislature where the governing Liberals are in a minority position.
The vote was 69 to 42.
Quebec Finance Minister Monique Jerome-Forget is to deliver an economic update next Tuesday, setting the stage for the election call.
Charest has complained the Action democratique du Quebec and the Parti Quebecois have been refusing to co-operate with the government.
But the leaders of both opposition parties maintain they are ready to work with the Liberals if they present a plan to reduce the impact of the current economic crisis.
