TORONTO 鈥 Former hostage Joshua Boyle says he and his wife decided to have children in captivity because they always planned to have a big family and decided, 鈥淗ey, let鈥檚 make the best of this and at least go home with a larger start on our dream family.鈥

Boyle, his American wife, Caitlan Coleman, and their three children were rescued Wednesday, five years after the couple was abducted in Afghanistan. The children were born in captivity.

Boyle told The Associated Press in an email Monday that as hostages, they had a lot of time on their hands. He noted Coleman is in her 30s and they didn鈥檛 want to waste time. He says the kids are now 4, 2 and 鈥渟omewhere around six months.鈥 The family arrived in Canada Friday.
