German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Kosovo and Serbia to reach a deal to ease tensions in the Serb-run part of Kosovo.
During a brief visit to Pristina on Monday, Merkel said it has to be clear that Serbia cannot get to be a candidate for EU membership without fulfilling some standards. She says during her talks with Serbian President Boris Tadic this summer she "made it clear what we want."
Merkel says there has to be "a solution for free trade, border co-operation" and Serbia's parallel governmental structures in Kosovo must end.
Germany has blocked Serbia's bid for EU candidacy over the Kosovo Serbs' opposition to accepting federal rule in northern Kosovo. They reject Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence and consider the region part of Serbia.
