OTTAWA - Federal Liberals are pushing for the restoration of rural mail service cut by the Harper government.
Mark Eyking, chair of the Liberal rural caucus, is introducing a private member's bill that would create a rural Canadian postal charter.
The charter would include restoration of service to 55,000 roadside mailboxes cut since September 2005.
It would also include a moratorium on future closures of rural post offices.
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says the Harper government's cuts to mail service send a message to rural communities that "You don't matter, you don't count."
He says ensuring universal mail service to Canadians, regardless of where they live, is a "central value" of the Liberal party.
