ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A review into the work of a suspended Newfoundland radiologist has found 21 of his patients who had inaccurate tests have died, but not as a result of the errors.
The chief of the province's largest health board says there may also be a number of patients who missed out on potentially life-saving treatment because of diagnostic mistakes committed by Dr. Fred Kasirye.
Louise Jones, interim CEO of the Eastern Health Authority, says a review by other radiologists concluded that more than 700 X-rays, CT scans and other exams under Kasirye's purview were wrong.
The review looked at more than 6,400 exams conducted on nearly 3,800 patients.
Kasirye was suspended in May after colleagues at the Burin Peninsula Health Centre questioned the quality of his work.
In a separate matter, Eastern Health is also the subject of a judicial inquiry and a class-action lawsuit after it was discovered that flawed breast cancer tests were given to more than 300 patients.
