Hundreds of people shouting "Death to Israel" gathered in Kandahar city Monday to protest against Israeli attacks on Gaza.

More than 700 people packed streets and rooftops for the rally, which including the burning of an Israeli flag.

Protesters also chanted "Death to America" and "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great) at the rally.

Bismillah Afghanmul, a member of Kandahar's provincial council, called for a unified Muslim response to the attacks in Gaza.

"In the history of Muslims, they never like war; they always like peace," Afghanmul said, according to a translator.

Israel's offensive in Gaza began on Dec. 27, 2008, in response to Palestinian rocket fire targeting southern Israel.

Since the Gaza attacks began, health officials report 524 Gazans have been killed, of which 200 were civilians. Nearly 2,000 have been wounded.

Five Israeli civilians and one soldier have also been killed.

At the demonstration, 38-year-old Matiullah called the Israeli attacks "disgusting" and said Muslims are being "targeted" by non-Muslim countries.

"The reason why we got together is to become one against these nations who are bothering us time and again," Matiullah said, according to The Canadian Press.

Haji Ghani, 33, said he was glad to be attending the demonstration.

"I am really against Israel's attack on Palestine. They are killing innocent people illogically," he said.

Monday's protest also included condemnation of NATO air strikes on Taliban fighters, which have also killed civilians.

In August, a U.S. raid on the village of Azizabad, in Herat province, killed several dozen people -- including women and children.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has condemned such bombings, saying they make it difficult for his people to support the war.
