Whitney Houston was laid to rest Sunday at the same New Jersey cemetery where her father is buried.

The late pop diva was buried in a plot next to John Houston at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, about 22 kilometres west of her hometown of Newark.

Her father was buried in the cemetery in 2003.

Only family members were said to be at the burial and the area was heavily guarded by police and security.

Houston was buried following a brief, private ceremony at the cemetery.

Fans lined the route from the funeral home in Newark to the cemetery to watch the motorcade as it passed.

Some fans yelled, "We love you, Whitney," as the hearse drove by.

Close friends and family had a chance to say goodbye to Houston at an invitation-only funeral service held Saturday at the star's childhood church.

Hundreds of mourners including music mogul Clive Davis and singer Stevie Wonder took part in the ceremony, which lasted more than three hours.

Though it was broadcast live for fans across the globe, the service was peppered with personal anecdotes from Houston's family members such as 1960s diva Dionne Warwick, who affectionately referred to her cousin by her nickname "Nippy."

The 48-year-old star died last Saturday on the eve of the Grammy awards. The cause of her sudden passing is still being investigated.

In her lifetime, Houston won six Grammy awards and sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone.
