VANCOUVER - A case of meningitis claimed the life of a Grade 10 student from Coquitlam, B.C., a spokeswoman for the Fraser Health Authority said Thursday.

Lisa Thibault said a test confirmed the cause of death of the 15-year-old Charles Best secondary student as meningococcal bacteria, serotype Y. She said there are five serotypes and the Y is extremely rare.

She said the chances of someone dying from the type are about one in 10 million.

Thibault says people who were in close contact with Brodie Campbell will be given a vaccination.

"The work (health officials) have been doing is to ensure that the folks who had close contact with this individual were protected as much as possible through preventative antibiotics."
