This week's episode of CTV's "Grey's Anatomy" moved several story lines forward. But fans who've been spoiled by the show's track record of powerful scenes and razor-sharp dialogue weren't given much to get excited about. It was an episode that might have made first-time viewers wonder what all the fuss is about.
(Spoiler alert: Stop reading now if you've saved the episode for later viewing.)
There were some entertaining lines. Cristina, in driest deadpan, said of Meredith's crowded house: "It's like a youth hostel." And there were a few revelations -- most notably that Izzie is in love with George. "It felt like something was falling into place," she said of their impromptu hookup.
But beyond that, the episode was no more compelling than standard nighttime soap opera fare.
At the top of the hour, a badly hung-over George had no memory of his wild night with Izzie. But while standing up to Callie's intimidating father over lunch, memories of his drunken tryst came flooding back.
George hurried to the hospital to see Izzie, who was relieved that he had finally remembered. "We need to figure out where we go from here and how we tell Callie," Izzie said. But George is determined to keep this from his new wife: "I'm not going to clear my conscience at her expense," he told Izzie. "This is our secret, OK?"
Meanwhile, the hospital's board of directors were busy interviewing candidates for the top job. Colin Marlow had a 10-year plan prepared, which irked Chief Webber, but none of the others had created elaborate presentations.
Mark Sloan, ever the opportunist, asked Bailey for her thoughts and then used her words to impress the board. And in an effort to please the Chief, he allowed Meredith to try a complicated grafting procedure on the pregnant Jane Doe, who was getting a new face.
Jane Doe's amnesia persists, but she's recovering steadily from her accident and becoming closer to her new best friend: Alex. She noticed the vibe between Alex and Addison, which seems to have cooled some but hasn't disappeared.
Other relationship updates:
- Cristina began the hour saying she wanted to return to her pre-engagement relationship with Burke. But after amputating the foot of a diabetic man, she understood that sometimes there's no going back. In the episode's final moments, she committed to marrying Burke. But as always, she had caveats: "It has to be small," she told him of the wedding. "And no veil."
- Derek remains worried about the circumstances of Meredith's near-drowning. "She can swim," he told the chief. "She gave up." Ever since that day, he said, he hasn't stopped worrying about her. At night "I just listen to her breathe, in case she stops," he said. Derek looked exhausted all episode (though somehow Patrick Dempsey can even make that look good) and his preoccupation likely impacted his interview with the board.
