TORONTO -- A California teacher put her own spin on Lizzo鈥檚 鈥楾ruth Hurts鈥 to motivate her Grade 2 class, encouraging her students to do their homework.
Dorothy Honey Mallari, a teacher at Los Medanos Elementary School in Pittsburg, Calif., remixed the pop star鈥檚 iconic single -- which boasts nearly .
But Mallari鈥檚 version changes the lyrics to focus on themes such as finishing homework, not fighting in class and having your friend鈥檚 back. For example, one lyric is 鈥淟et's be great, 'cuz I know we are great.鈥
She recorded herself dancing on classroom desks -- in heels, no less -- and leading her students to enthusiastically sing her rendition. She told that 鈥淚 think it worked well 鈥 I just liked the beat."
Mallari told the outlet she sent it to the school district officials who were thrilled with it. The posted on the Pittsburg Unified School District鈥檚 page has the caption, 鈥淢s. Mallari uses a Lizzo song to teach her students to be GREAT.鈥
Mallari鈥檚 tribute even reached the ears of the MTV Video Music-award-nominated artist herself, who " 鈥 this IS the best thing I鈥檝e watched today.鈥
The California teacher told Fox KTVU that each year she comes up with a class song 鈥渢o reflect what鈥檚 going on in the classroom and what songs the kids are into.鈥
