After winning an Emmy for directing the 90th Academy Awards, Glenn Weiss used his acceptance speech to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen.
鈥淚鈥檓 really grateful to be here, but it鈥檚 bittersweet,鈥� Weiss told the star-studded crowd from the stage at Los Angeles鈥� Microsoft Theater Monday night.
鈥淭he person most proud at this moment would be mom and she passed away just two weeks ago鈥� Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend Jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life and mom was right, don鈥檛 ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don鈥檛 like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.鈥�
With a camera pointed at a happily stunned Svendsen, the crowd erupted in applause and cheers.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 ask yet!鈥� Weiss said
Svendsen quickly joined Weiss on stage.
鈥淭his is the ring that my dad put on my mom鈥檚 finger 67 years ago,鈥� Weiss said, holding out the ring.
鈥淥h my God,鈥� Svendsen whispered.
鈥淎nd to my sisters and brothers, I didn鈥檛 swipe it! Dad knows I have it, OK?鈥� Weiss joked.
鈥淚 love you,鈥� Svendsen said.
鈥淛an, I want to put this ring my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above,鈥� Weiss said, getting down on one knee. 鈥淲ill you marry me?鈥�
After her 鈥淵es,鈥� the couple shared a long kiss.
鈥淭hank you to the Academy!鈥� Weiss said, beaming. 鈥淭hank you everybody!鈥�
Weiss has directed numerous awards shows, including the Tony Awards and the Miss Universe Pageant. The award for is his 14th Emmy.
