The stars were back in full glamour Sunday night at the 66th annual Golden Globes in Hollywood after last year's ceremony was cancelled. Many opted for elegance over outrageous on the red carpet for the awards show that celebrates the best in film and television in a laid-back, dinner party-like setting. Strapless gowns, plunging necklines, ruffles and swept back hair were the looks seen on many of Hollywood's most beautiful stars.
Eva Longoria Parker - Looking nothing like her frumpy character Gabby on "Desperate Housewives," Eva looked stunning in a red strapless gown with a plunging neckline and mermaid silhouette by Reem Acra. Her hair was swept back in a bun and she carried a sparkling silver clutch.
Jennifer Morrison from "House" radiated elegance in a strapless royal blue floor-length gown from Oscar de La Renta, complemented by Lorraine Schwartz jewels, with circular dangly earrings that were designed especially for the dress.
Ricky Gervais from HBO's "Extras" and the BBC's "The Office" was one of the first to arrive in a Calvin Klein black tuxedo and smart black tie. Looking very much like red carpet host Ryan Seacrest, the two posed for a photo and commented on how looked like brothers. Ricky was also spotted later on taking pictures on the red carpet with his iPhone.
Debra Messing did not follow the elegant backswept hair trend, but opted instead for big bushy curls wrapped in a ponytail. But her hair was balanced by her sleek black satin dress with a halter neck and ruffled bottom.
Drew Barrymore also chose a different look for her hair, wearing a big teased 'do that complemented her floor length off the shoulder grey gown by designer John Galliano that had a gauzy, flowy mermaid bottom.
Christina Applegate looked stunning as always wearing a gold strapless gown with full gathered skirt by Roberto Cavalli and a large jeweled necklace by Lorraine Schwarz.
America Ferreira looked anything but ugly in a one shoulder silver dress fitted at the waist that flowed out in gathers to the knee.
Maggie Gyllenhaal took a less traditional route, wearing a blue and black leopard print one shoulder dress with big bow on the left side and black band at the waist.
Renee Zellweger looked lovely in a dress with a sheer black front, slim fitting floor length black skirt and ruffled cutout sleeves.
Kate Winslet had her hair swept back in an updo and wore an elegant black satin gown with a velvet bow belt.
Susan Sarandon didn't wear a traditional gown and instead sported a Hugo Boss tuxedo, Robert Marc sunglasses and a long string of pearls by Fred Leighton.
Jennifer Lopez wore a dress reminiscent of the famous Versace gown she wore at the Grammys. This year's gold lame dress was cinched at the waist and featured a plunging draped fabric neckline and a flowing floor-length skirt.
Angelina Jolie wore a silver slinky dress that was fitted at the waist and she wore her long hair down and wavy. But when you have Brad Pitt on your arm, you can get away with minimal accessories.
Anne Hathaway also stood out with a black strapless gown by Armani and low swept bun in her hair but Marisa Tomei stood out for another reason. Her flowy Pirate-like blouse and floor-length black skirt and wide lace belt looked out of place next to the elegance of the other female stars.
