EDMONTON - Health officials in Edmonton need infants to test a new vaccine designed to fight bacteria that cause illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis, ear infections and blood poisoning.
Capital Health is recruiting 60 healthy children between eight and 14-weeks old to test the vaccine. Dr. Gerry Predy, the health region's chief public health officer, says immunization is the most effective way to protect babies from disease.
The vaccine currently used treats seven types of bacteria that cause illnesses.
The new vaccine would treat 13 types.
Children in the clinical trial will receive the new vaccine, along with their regular infant shots, between two and 12 months of age.
