A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck China's southwestern province of Sichuan on Saturday, leaving at least 22 people dead and injuring more than 100 others.

Xinhua, China's official news agency, reported that 17 died in Sichuan and five others died in neighbouring Yunnan province.

All affected counties in Sichuan and Yinnan provinces reported damaged homes, Xinjua said.

Local reports suggest nearly 1,000 houses were reduced to rubble in Panzhihua, a city in southwestern Sichuan located just 50 kilometres from the quake's epicentre.

"Locals in the county rushed out into the open. Cracks appeared on house walls and many windows were broken," Zheng Zhouwei, a local legislator in Yongren, told Xinhua.

China's State Seismology Bureau said the quake occurred in a mountainous area around 4:30 p.m. local time.

A massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Sichuan on May 12, leaving nearly 70,000 people dead and another five million homeless.

Since then, a series of aftershocks have kept people on edge.
