MONTREAL - Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe is telling a provincial commission that Quebec must be exempt from Canadian multiculturalism laws so the province can protect its own culture.
Duceppe told Quebec's commission on reasonable accommodation today in Montreal that Canadian-style multiculturalism doesn't work in the province. Duceppe says Quebec needs to integrate immigrants to secure the future of the French language and francophone culture.
He also wants a renewed emphasis on promoting the use of French in Quebec workplaces.
Quebec has been in an uproar for months over how far the majority culture should go in adopting to minorities.
The commission headed by academics Gerard Bouchard and Charles Taylor is touring the province studying the issue.
