Liberal Leader Stephane Dion is urging the prime minister to mend fences with the premiers when he meets them for an economic discussion over dinner on Friday.
Dion says Prime Minister Stephen Harper has broken his word to some premiers in the past and has even been insulting to them. He says it's time to replace confrontation with teamwork.
Dion also says Harper has finally come around to realizing that the economy could be in trouble.
"We need to be careful," he said. "We need to watch the economy."
He refused to say, however, whether the government might face defeat over its next budget.
"We cannot speculate before seeing what the government will propose."
NDP Leader Jack Layton has also written Harper with his recipe for a successful meeting with the premiers.
He urges Harper to end his "reckless" approach to corporate tax cuts and invest money instead in helping struggling industries, rebuilding crumbling infrastructure and battling climate change.
