NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - A prosecutor agreed Tuesday to postpone for one week an arraignment hearing for actor Daniel Baldwin, who faces felony charges for allegedly stealing his friend's car.
Baldwin's lawyer, Grant Hoagland, called Assistant District Attorney Dennis Conway to ask for the postponement, said Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney. Baldwin had been expected in court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The 46-year-old brother of actors William, Stephen and Alec Baldwin is already named in a US$25,000 arrest warrant for failing to show up at a hearing in the same case last week. That warrant will stand until Baldwin reports to court, said Emami.
Hoagland did not immediately return a call for comment Tuesday. Baldwin's manager, Daniel Spilo, did not immediately return a phone message.
Baldwin has been free on bail since he was arrested at a Santa Monica hotel in November while driving a white 2003 GMC Yukon that had been reported stolen in Orange County. Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said at the time that the car belonged to Baldwin's friend, but he did not have permission to take it.
The actor was charged in December with two felony counts of unlawfully taking a car and receiving stolen property. He could face up to three years in prison if convicted, Emami said.
In April 2006, prosecutors declined to file felony charges against Baldwin after his arrest in a cocaine possession case. Police said they found the actor and another man in a Santa Monica hotel, along with cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
In July 2006, Baldwin made headlines when he drove a rented Ford Thunderbird at more than 130 km/h through Los Angeles traffic and crashed into two parked cars, police said.
