KINSHASA, Congo - Health officials in Congo say an outbreak of measles has left 106 children dead.
Congolese officials said Tuesday that 90 of the deaths have been in Katanga province. Aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres says there have been 21,000 cases in five provinces in the giant Central African nation.
The medical aid group says it has given 1.5 million vaccinations since last year but needs help to continue its efforts.
Since 2008, funding cuts for vaccination campaigns have allowed measles to spread again where previously it was close to being eradicated. The number of cases has surged, with large outbreaks reported in 30 African countries.
The cost of vaccinating a child against measles is less than $1.
