TORONTO - Toronto-based Latin-jazz singer Amanda Martinez has scored several gigs in South Africa as part of next month's World Cup celebrations.
A news release says Martinez will perform at three concerts over two days in Johannesburg as revellers gather for the soccer extravaganza.
On June 11, she'll play at Sandton FIFA Fan Fest at InnesFree Park and at Mary Fitzgerald Square, where the Live 8 concert was held in 2005.
And on June 12, she'll hit the stage at Soweto FIFA Fan Fest at Elkah Stadium.
Martinez plans to perform her new tune, "Suenos Posibles (Dreams Realized)," written in honour of the first game of the World Cup that features teams representing her heritage: Mexico and South Africa.
Martinez will travel to the city June 8 with her family, including her mother, who hails from South Africa and hasn't been there in 26 years.
She'll follow up the trip with a Canadian festival tour with dates including Winnipeg, Montreal and Edmonton.
Martinez released her debut album, "Sola," in 2006. Her sophomore disc, "Amor," hit shelves last year.
