A group of Winnipeg elementary school children moved by the sacrifice of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo are creating handmade poppies, hoping to raise funds for the fallen soldier鈥檚 son.

The students in Westgrove School鈥檚 crochet club are about the same age as Cirillo鈥檚 son Marcus, and are doing what they can to offer help.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to say I鈥檓 sorry for your father but I hope we can just make a difference and make you happy,鈥 said student Autumn Ryden.

The group has made more than 400 poppies so far, raising about $750. Half of the money will go to the Cirillo family, and the other half to a local Legion.

Students are having trouble keeping up with demand for the poppies, and will continue making them until Monday.

But one poppy won鈥檛 be sold. Instead, it will be taken to Ottawa and placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
