A Florida mayor has been arrested on drug charges, prompting the city's local sheriff to declare that "this isn't Toronto."
Hampton Mayor Barry Layne Moore was arrested on Monday after police received information that the 51-year-old had been allegedly selling prescription medication, according to a statement posted on the .
Moore is accused of acquiring and selling Oxycodone.
"This isn't Toronto. We will not tolerate illegal drug activity, in my jurisdiction, by anyone to include our elected officials," Sheriff Gordon Smith said in the statement 鈥� a reference to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford鈥檚 recent drug admissions.
鈥淚 am not always known to be politically correct, but my stance is that you have one guy that has made a mockery of your city,鈥� Smith told CP24 Wednesday.
鈥淭his guy just don鈥檛 quit and he is full of excuses and stupidity. You just don鈥檛 smoke crack one time and you just don鈥檛 do that in some drunken stupor. You know there are a lot of people that get drunk and do stupid things, but they don鈥檛 pick up a crack pipe and decide to start smoking crack."
Ford has said he only smoked crack cocaine once, and has not been charged with any crime.
Toronto鈥檚 mayor has been the target of international ridicule since his admission earlier this month. The embattled mayor has since been stripped of some of his mayoral powers, with the Toronto's deputy mayor taking over.
Smith said he understands why Ford has not been charged with any crimes and gave a 鈥渟hout out鈥� to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair.
鈥淚 believe he is a stand-up guy,鈥� he said.
Blair has said in the past that the evidence 鈥� including the now-infamous crack video 鈥� does not support criminal charges against the mayor.
Hampton, a town of about 500, is located in northern Florida.
